Russian Ark

Hmm.... I'm not sure I can come up with something intelligent to say due to the fact that I was extremely tired and have to admit to falling asleep during parts of the film. I wish I had been more awake, because I'm sure it was at least semi-worthwhile, but I was a sleepy head.

I know, I'm a bad student. I will say that from what I saw, it seemed a bit too focused on minute details for me. The character, Marquis de Custine, was rather odd. Everytime I would wake up in between nodding off, he seemed to be speaking with a woman about art. It was odd, cause it happened multiple times.

I think it would have helped if I was more aware of Russian history. When the film showed the figures from Russian history that I knew, such as Czar Nicholas, the last Russian czar, I was interested. I was able to stay awake during those points. So I feel a better background in the characters being shown and the time periods portrayed would have been useful.

Sorry Isham.

That's quite all right--I have no great sentimental attachment to this film myself. I primarily think it's worth seeing for the seemingly impossible stunt they pull off in successfully choreographing that many people in that many rooms. As for the history presented in the film, it's too scattered and even too random to be of much use or probably even of much interest to a non-Russian. And the "storyline" with the dying narrator and all simply smacks of a pretense (and not a terribly good one at that) for justifying the whole shebang.

My favorite aspect of the film actually is the narrator's voice (spoken by the director Sokurov himself): I find it simply so soothing to listen to, and I love it when he repeats the words uttered by the Frenchman Custine. Actually, I try to get a hold of Sokurov interviews just to listen to him speak!

I do agree with you about being more aware of Russian history coming in handy with watching Russian Ark. I know there were all these famous characters running around, but I could only pick out a few. I'm with you on feeling sleepy throughout this film, with really no plot, I tried to focus in on the narrator and bickering European for the most part, but their conversation just didn't do it for me.

i just commented on another blog about more awareness of russian history would have helped. it at least would have piqued our interest a little more since there is little time for character development besides our narrator and the marquis. it definitely would have been more appealing to us if it had parodied famous american families, the kennedys, the lincolns, the clintons, or whatever. traveling through the rooms of the white house.

I too find this movie not so much as hard to follow, but boring. I do agree with Eric's comment about how if it was another family, and it was all in one shot, it would be more interesting.
